Mad Hatter When it comes to a cowboy's topper, the moniker “Mad Hatter” refers to more than an eccentric character in Alice in Wonderland. The origin of the term comes from the phrase “as mad as a hatter,” referring to the neurological disorders some old-time hat makers suffered from breathing vapors from the mercury used to cure pelts. Today, most hats are made in factories where machines do much of the manufacturing, but there are still custom hatters who preserve and perpetuate their traditional cowboy craft.
Last American Cowboy Brings the Majesty and Challenge of the West to Animal PlanetHidden amid the mammoth Montana landscape are three family-owned and operated cattle ranches and the setting of Animal Planet’s newest original series, Last American Cowboy. This epic adventure follows three families of tough, tenacious and headstrong cowboys through freak storms, deadly outbreaks of disease, hungry predators and forest fires that threaten their livelihood. Each ranch will need to rely on family bonds and personal strength to keep this tradition of the American West alive. Off the Grid Using alternative energy sources, cowboy poet Waddie Mitchell and his wife, Lisa, have created a self-sustaining lodge in tune with Nevada’s high-desert ranchland.
Mule Business There is a recurring condition in the life of the cowboy when bravado, belligerence and bent judgment overcomes the normal human self-protective instinct.
Cowboy Cooking Recipes This past spring, Western Horseman held a cowboy cooking recipe contest. The grand-prize winner, Bob Heavirland, of North Branch, Minnesota, received a prize package that included tickets to the Western Heritage Classic in Abilene, Texas, an autographed cookbook and spice mix from Tom Perini, and an assortment of Western Horseman products.
