Johnson Ranches Win Texas Ranch Round Up
Johnson Ranches claimed its first championship at the Texas Ranch Roundup, held August 14–15 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The 29th annual ranch rodeo and Western celebration features 10 of the most renown ranches in the Lone Star state, including the JA, Pitchfork, R.A. Brown, Spade, Tongue River and Waggoner.
Johnson Ranches racked up big points by consistently placing in calf doctoring, team penning, team branding, bronc riding and wild cow milking. The outfit, which has competed at the Ranch Roundup for 20 years, also garnered points from first-place finishes in photography, crafts and jewelery, and cornbread.
The Ranch Roundup, the first ranch rodeo of its kind, remains unique in that ranches earn points toward the championship both in the arena and on the grounds. From bronc riding to wood working, wild cow milking to peach cobbler, winning the event requires contributions from the entire family ranch.
Newcomer Circle Bar Ranch placed second in the competition, thanks in large part to team member Zack Peters, who won the average in the bronc riding by posting scores of 79 and 78.
Stoney Jones of the Tongue River Ranch was named Top Hand, the second time he has claimed the title. His gray gelding, Rock Star, was named Top Horse. Cody Taylor of the Pitchfork Ranch was runner-up in the Top Hand category.
Sponsored by the Rehab Center and Bud Light, the Texas Ranch Roundup raises thousands of dollars for three charities: North Texas Rehabilitation Center, West Texas Boys Ranch and West Texas Rehabilitation Center.
