Be a Better Horseman - Mike Major
Are You Ready to Change Leads
Before you ever try a lead change at a lope, your horse should be able to do this exercise at a walk and a trot. Travel down the middle of the pen or on the diagonal from one corner of the arena to the other. Pick up your horse’s left shoulder and arc his face to the left. Then put your right leg on him at about the flank cinch and push his hips to the left. When he responds, release your hand and leg, and let your horse relax. Ask your horse to do that on the same side four or five times. Then work on the other side. It’s not good to switch directions every time. When your horse is really comfortable doing that in each direction, without being antsy, a lead change comes easy.
