Be a Better Horseman-Chris Cox
Just the Basics, Please
I don't believe in using any special equipment to start a colt. I just rely on these basics: - Rope halter with 13-foot lead rope
I do believe in using leg protection on a horse at times, but I don't put leg protection on a colt that I start. I want him to learn how to place his feet and be aware of where his feet are. I've seen horses sometimes become "immune" to this when they wear leg protection too early. However, once I start asking a horse to perform maneuvers in which he crosses his legs, such as a turnaround, and to do things at a faster pace, I use polo wraps or boots for protection.
